The Manfrotto 790B Modo Mono is a nice alternative to getting a standard tripod stand. There have been many occasions where I struggled getting the perfect shot and after some advice from I got the Manfrotto 790B Modo Mono and had ridden myself of the problem.

Pros: Inexpensive, light, packs very small, well made.
Cons: Needs addition of ball head (in my opinion),

I needed assistance with steadying shots with my long lens. I reckon this gives me the equivelent of an additional 2 stops on shutter speed.
This monopod is rated to 1 kg (2.2 pound) but I happily use it with Nikon D90 + Nikkor 70-300 VR - about 1.6 kg.
