Nikon 24mm f/2.8 AIS Nikkor review by zanxion72

Pros: One of the sharpest lenses ever made, fast enough, wide with low distortion
Cons: Mustache barrel distortion, noticeable if you shoot brick walls

One of the best wide lenses ever made. It has a high IQ right from 2.8 and across the frame. This has always been a sought after lens because of its high IQ all over the frame. Most 24mm or wider lenses smear the image at the edges of the lens. This one does not.

Pros: I like the angle of view on this lens
Cons: Just doesn't seem as sharp as it should be

I've owned both and I don't think either the 24/F2 AIS or the 24 F/2.8 AIS are that great. I've read many places that the "crown jewels" of the wide angle line up from Nikon are the 28's. I shoot with the 28 F/2 AIS and it is truly magnificent. Extreme sharpness from foreground to infinity. I just wish the 24's were like it. This 24 likes to flare like mad. Don't need flare in the pics. So, I just can't give it a high rating at all.

Pros: very compact! metal body, nostalgic feeling
Cons: old & outdated, so-so performer

this is my lens.. if I'm taking my Nikon F3 for that nostalgic street hunts. it's wide, small, fast & sturdy. the mechanics are perfect. I still own this lens and it runs smoothly until now.

Optics are good (especially for its era), but no better than any modern lens. Use a modern (digital) body? a lenskit would outperforms this lens in terms of image quality.
I keep it for that nostalgic moments. If you're a collector, then it's a must have.
