Canon MT-24EX Macro Twin Lite review by Ross_Alford

Pros: Easy to use, flexible, makes macro photography easy
Cons: heavy/large, cannot keep filter on 105 macro lens

I do a lot of macro photography of small animals. This requires flash. Twin-flash units like this are great as you can control lighting for really attractive results. I used to use a Nikon R1 with an SB800 as controller. I liked it, but it is fiddly, always a bit wobbly, and because the SB800 communicates with the little flashes by preflashing, every exposure is preceded by a prolonged crackle (or more like a tearing sound) of little flashes, causing animals to blink and shut their eyes before the actual exposure.

When I switched to Canon, I thought one of the downsides would be having to switch to this unit. I was very wrong. Yes, it has primitive hard wired cords, but there are several huge advantages: 1. no blitz of preflashes as the units talk to one another. There are a couple, but very short and not enough to cause animals to squeeze their eyes shut. 2. More solid; the units attach to the ring more solidly and do not wobble. 3. Simple controls for common tasks--you can change lighting ratio or total flash exposure very easily using dedicated controls on the back of the flash, no more wading through menus.

If you like to shoot handheld macros, or small animal macros, you need to try this unit out. They haven't updated it in ages, but I think that's because they haven't been able to think of any major ways to improve it.

Pros:
Cons:

I would not enjoy macro photography without this flash. It provides reliable, even illumination that allows me to stop down enough to get a decent DOF for the subject. It also frees me up from the tripod so I miss far fewer shots. I cant say anything negative about this product except maybe it's expensive but that is no secret....
