I reviewed the R1 system under macro gear. If you have a Nikon that supports the commander/wireless feature- and if you like getting up close & personal with your subjects- go no further. The system is simple, flexible, and offers perfect exposure. I can't say enough about the new system. It is brilliant. the wireless feature is especially important in allowing you to place lights wherever it seems right. I would strongly recommend that you consider this light as part of the R1 package- the kit has some great accessories that really expand the potential of the lighting system.
